NC Extra: Constitutional Rights of the Homeless

This week the Los Angeles city council voted 10-to2 to settle a lawsuit (Mitchell vs. City off LA) filed by four homeless individuals who claimed their constitutional rights were violated when police confiscated their possessions. Some believe that by settling, the city has agreed that homeless individuals must be allowed to keep their possessions without fear of having them taken away. Others say this settlement will have long term consequences for terms of public health and liveability downtown. NBC4’s Conan talks to Steve Diaz, the Deputy Director of Organizing with LA Community Action Network, and Shayla Myers, one of the attorneys who filed the case against the city and a member of the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles.
