Firefighters battled a strip mall fire that cast thick black smoke Wednesday morning over the San Gabriel area.
Details about how the fire at Valley & New Center strip mall started were not immediately available. The fire was at the intersection of New Avenue and Valley Boulevard.
It was knocked down later Wednesday morning.
A column of smoke rising from the site could be seen for miles more than an hour after the fire east of Los Angeles started around 6 a.m. Firefighters reported a possible roof collapse, but there were no reports of injuries.
