Surfer Who Died During Night Session on Malibu Coast Identified

Damon Michael Geller went surfing at night and died of an apparent medical emergency at Topanga State Beach. Gordon Tokumatsu reports for the NBC4 News on Friday, Dec. 21, 2018.

A surfer has died during a night session on the Malibu coast.

Damon Michael Geller, 48, of Pacific Palisades died at the beach about 11 p.m. Thursday, according to the coroner's office and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Los Angeles County sheriff's Deputy Morgan Arteaga says the death was due to a "medical episode" while surfing but there are no further details.

Much of the Southern California coast has been under a high surf advisory due to the latest in a series of large west-northwest swells.

The National Weather Service warned of strong rip currents that can pull swimmers and surfers out to sea.
