The body of a swimmer reported missing off the Southern California coast was found early Tuesday morning.
Witnesses said the swimmer disappeared Monday in the ocean off Rancho Palos Verdes. They reported hearing someone screaming for help about 6:45 p.m. Monday in the area of Portuguese Bend, according to Los Angeles County Fire Department dispatcher.
The man was reportedly last seen at 6:50 p.m. swimming with a pool flotation device near Trump National Golf Course, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. One witnessed paddled out on a surfboard, but could not find the victim, according to the sheriff's department.
Boats, a helicopter and divers were deployed, but there was no sign of the victim until Tuesday morning when a body was discovered around 8 a.m., according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
The body washed ashore on the beach below the tall cliffs that border the golf course.
The swimmer was described as being in his mid-20s. Details about his identity were not immediately available.
"This is a tragic reminder of the dangers associated with swimming alone," the sheriff's department said in a statement. "Our coastal waters can be treacherous for inexperienced swimmers, and currents are often unpredictable."
