Woman Critically Hurt in Apparent Random Attack in Burbank

A 63-year-old woman was randomly attacked in the middle of the day in Burbank. Her screams were heard by office workers nearby. She’s in critical condition and the alleged homeless man who attacked her is in custody.

A man on parole for assault is in custody on suspicion of an apparently random attack in Burbank on a 63-year-old woman who was left in critical condition, police said Tuesday.

Officers responded about 1:50 p.m. Monday to a report of a possible fight near the 1400 block of North San Fernando Boulevard, according to Sgt. Derek Green of the Burbank Police Department.

“This is a violent random attack that occurred in the middle of the day, on a work day, outside of a busy office building,” Green said.

"When officers arrived, they found a female victim suffering from head trauma in an alley to the rear of an office building," Green said.

"Several bystanders directed officers to a male suspect who was seen fleeing the area."

Within minutes, officers took suspect Hector Manuel Ulloa, a 51-year-old transient from San Bernardino, into custody in the area of Amherst Drive and Broadway, Green said.

"Police interviewed witnesses who reported seeing Ulloa attacking the woman in the alley," he said. "Witnesses said they heard screams for help and saw Ulloa kicking and punching the victim numerous times. It appears as though Ulloa targeted the victim by hiding and waiting for her as she walked by."

The woman, whose name was withheld, was taken to a trauma center, where she was listed in critical condition, the sergeant said.

"Although Burbank police detectives are still investigating a possible motive for this attack, the act appears to be completely random, as there is no known association between ... Ulloa and the victim," Green said.

Ulloa was booked on suspicion of attempted murder and was being held without bail, he said.
