US figure skaters finally get their gold medals for 2022 Olympics in Paris ceremony

US figure skaters finally get their gold medals for 2022 Olympics in Paris ceremony

More than two years after competing at the Beijing Winter Olympics, U.S. figure skaters will finally receive their gold medals, upgraded from silver after Russian athlete Kamila Valieva was disqualified for a doping violation. Alexa Knierim, Nathan Chen and Evan Bates share what this moment means to them.

A touch of winter came to the 2024 Olympics on Wednesday when the United States figure skating team finally got their gold medals as 2022 Olympic champions.

The special medal ceremony allowed the nine Americans to parade on a runway in the bright Paris sunshine, gaze at the Eiffel Tower and bask in warm cheers from the fans packed into the stands at Champions Park.

Exactly 2½ years after the figure skating team event ended at the Beijing Olympics — and the doping saga of the winning Russian team started — the Americans got the medals that weren't awarded at the time.

“I think it absolutely was worth the wait. Definitely,” said Karen Chen, wearing the first gold medal of her career around her neck.

Sarah Hildebrandt to wrestle Cuban Yusneylis Guzman Lopez for gold

Uncertainly no more: Sarah Hildebrandt will face Cuban Yusneylis Guzman Lopez for a gold medal in women's 50kg wrestling.

Guzman Lopez lost to India's Vinesh Phogat in yesterday's semifinal match, and it appeared Phogat would face Hildebrandt today. But wrestlers are required to meet weight requirements on both days of competition, and Phogat failed the weight test this morning, coming in 100 grams above weight.

As a result, Guzman was awarded the spot in the finals.

The Wrestling Federation of India said it would appeal the decision, so there was some suspense as to who Hildebrandt would face. But the appeal did not seek a spot for Phogat in the final -- instead, it requested she be awarded a silver medal, in addition to the loser of the gold-medal match.

The gold-medal match will be in about 45 minutes. Stream live on NBC Olympics or Peacock.

US wins silver in team artistic swimming

The United States has just won silver in team artistic swimming, with China taking the gold and Spain bronze. It's the U.S.' first medal in the team event since bronze in Athens in 2004.

With longtime powerhouse Russia not competing in Paris, the United States and China were both eyeing medals going into the team acrobatic final, which capped off the three-day team competition that also included technical and freestyle portions.

It's the first Olympics to include this third acrobatic portion, which added to the unpredictability of the competition in Paris with the absence of the Russian team.

With gold medal match hours away, Sarah Hildebrandt's opponent still up in the air

As Sarah Hildebrandt's gold-medal wrestling match creeps closer, one major question remains: Who will she face?

Right now, the official matchup is against Cuba's Yusneylis Guzman Lopez. But India's wrestling federation is trying a last-ditch effort to get Vinesh Phogat back in the match.

Yesterday, Phogat beat Guzman Lopez, 5-0, in the women's 50kg semifinal, and thought she secured a spot in the gold-medal match. But wrestlers are required to make weight on both days of the competition, and this morning Phogat failed her weigh-in, coming in 100 grams above the 50kg limit.

As a result, Guzman Lopez was awarded the spot in the finals.

The Wrestling Federation of India filed a last-ditch appeal to get Phogat back in the match. But with about two hours until the match, time is running out on Phogat's gold-medal hopes.

Australia got a penalty shot, and Luke Pavillard converted to extend the lead. The penalty also included a four-minute power play, which will stretch into the second quarter.

Hooper, coincidentally, was the lone goal scorer for the U.S. Pavillard had two goals for Australia.

Claire Michel, Olympic triathlete who fell ill after swim in Seine River, says a virus made her sick

Claire Michel, Olympic triathlete who fell ill after swim in Seine River, says a virus made her sick

Paris’ deputy mayor, Pierre Rabadan, called for people to wait for “all the facts before rushing to conclusions” regarding a Belgian athlete becoming ill after swimming in the Seine river.

A Belgian triathlete who fell ill, causing her team to withdraw from mixed relay event at the Paris Olympics, said blood tests showed it was a virus that made her sick.

Belgium’s Olympic committee announced Sunday that it would withdraw its team from Monday's triathlon mixed relay because Claire Michel was unable to compete. Michel had competed a few days earlier in the women’s triathlon, which included a swim in the Seine River.

Bacteria levels in the long-polluted river have been in flux during the Games, causing test swims ahead of the triathlon events to be canceled and the men's triathlon to be delayed by a day. Organizers had said that water quality tests done the day of the individual triathlon races showed “very good” levels of fecal bacteria E. coli and enterococci.

Some news outlets had reported that Michel had been sickened by E. coli and spent several days in the hospital. In an Instagram post Tuesday, she wrote that there had been “a lot of conflicting information in the media lately” and that she wanted to “clarify a few things.”

File. Nikki Hiltz reacts after winning in the women’s 1500 meter final on Day Ten of the 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Track & Field Trials at Hayward Field on June 30, 2024 in Eugene, Oregon.

Team USA middle-distance runner Nikki Hiltz secured a spot in the women’s 1500-meter semifinals after finishing third in their qualifying heat at the Paris Olympics on Tuesday.

After the race, Hiltz, who is nonbinary and transgender and uses their/them pronouns, shared a post on social media to celebrate their achievement, extend a message of encouragement to the trans and nonbinary community and seemingly weigh in on a heated gender dispute involving two female boxers.

“There’s a lot of ignorance and hate out there right now. For those who identify as nonbinary or trans and are doing cool things in the world (which is most likely all of you because all queer people are cool AF) remember you are magic and that it’s not the critic who counts. I love you. I need you. I see you. Keep going,” Hiltz wrote, in part, on Instagram.

Hiltz’s message comes as two fellow Olympians, Imane Khelif of Algeria and Lin Yu-ting of Taiwan, have come under scrutiny and a barrage of online abuse after reports surfaced that the two women were disqualified from competing at last year’s Women’s World Boxing Championships. The International Boxing Association, the Russian-led sports organization that disqualified them, alleged that they had failed to pass unspecified gender tests that found they had male chromosomes.
