Your first (and maybe only) women's breaking gold medalist: Japan's Ami

Ami Yuasi had the moves.

Yuasi, competing simply under the name Ami, used an impressive array of dance moves to best Lithuania's Nicka in the first ever breaking gold medal battle.

The battle featured two breaking superstars. A year ago, Nicka became the youngest ever breaking world champion, at 16. The year before, Ami won her second breaking world championship.

But on the biggest stage the sport has ever seen, Ami proved to be the better breaker.

Breaking seemed to capture the attention of people around the world -- although not necessarily for the right reasons. Many on social media were stunned that the competition, in which Andy Bernard would fit right in, was in the Olympics at all.

American skateboarder Nyjah Huston criticizes ‘rough' quality of bronze medal

American skateboarder Nyjah Huston criticizes ‘rough' quality of bronze medal

Less than two weeks after winning bronze at the Paris Olympics, American skateboarder Nyjah Huston took to social media to express disappointment about how the medal is holding up to wear and tear.

American skateboarder Nyjah Huston was one of the earlier winners in Paris, earning a bronze medal in the men’s street skateboarding final on July 29.

The 29-year-old star took to Instagram on Thursday to complain about how his prized possession looks like "it went to war and back," displaying his discolored and chipped bronze medal.

"These Olympic medals look great when they’re brand new," Huston said in an Instagram story. "But after letting it sit on my skin with some sweat for a little bit and letting my friends wear it over the weekend, they’re apparently not as high quality as you would think.”

"I mean, look at that thing," he continued, turning the medal over in his hand. "It’s looking rough, even the front. It’s starting to chip off a little.”

China gets 30th gold medal, pulls even with US

With about 48 hours of competition left in these Olymipcs, the battle for gold supremacy is as tight as it can be.

China's Shixiao Xu and Mengya Sun won gold in the women's canoe double 500-meter race this morning. That gives China 30 gold medals, the same as the United States.

There are lots of ways to carve up the medal count. If you're looking at total medals, the U.S. pretty much has that wrapped — leading China, 103-74. But if you're just looking at golds, it looks like it will come down to the wire.

The U.S. hopes to add to its gold total today — Americans will be competing for gold in a handful of events, including in the men's and women's 4x100 relays, wrestling and breaking.

Are you ready? Breaking to make Olympic debut

On just the second-to-last full day of competition in Paris, a new sport is making its much-anticipated Olympic debut: Breaking.

Breaking is essentially breakdancing, with judges scoring the dance moves.

Judging is based on creativity, personality, technique, variety, performativity and musicality, and scores can fluctuate throughout a breaking battle based on how breakers respond to their opponents.

Unlike in figure skating or gymnastics, competitors are unaware of the music ahead of time — the improvisation element carries great weight in the judging.

"Breaking is a lot more accessible than a lot of other sports and art forms that are out there," said Sunny Choi, who will compete for Team USA. "You really just need a dance floor, some music."
