More than 90 people, including 20 children, were killed in an Israeli airstrike on a residential building in Gaza early Tuesday, local officials said.

Some 93 people were killed, another 40 people were missing and dozens injured, according to the Gaza government media office.

Hundreds of men, women and children shout and plead outside Qala Bakery, the only functioning bread shop in Khan Younis in Gaza. Some said they had come away empty-handed after waiting for a few hours. Others said they were reduced to using flour infested with worms.

Israeli forces withdrew from one of northern Gaza’s last functioning medical facilities, leaving a trail of destruction in what the United Nation’s human rights chief has labelled one of the conflict’s “darkest moments.”

The Israel Defense Forces said Friday it is conducting “precise strikes on military targets in Iran.”

The attack came as U.S. and Israeli negotiators prepared to travel to Qatar in the coming days to resume talks for a cease-fire with Hamas.

Hashem Safieddine was expected to succeed his cousin Hassan Nasrallah, one of the founding members of the Iran-backed Lebanese group, who was killed last month.

Speaking alongside German Chancellor Scholz in Berlin, President Joe Biden said he told the prime minister of Israel that he wants the death of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar to be “an opportunity to seek a path to peace.”

An Israeli airstrike killed two Lebanese soldiers and wounded three others on Friday, Lebanon’s military said, just hours after Israeli troops fired on the headquarters of United Nations peacekeepers in southern Lebanon, injuring two peacekeepers for the second time in as many days.
