Winds across Southern California have begun to falter as crews battling the Palisades and Eaton fires begin to make their first substantial progress towards containment.

Several new road closures surrounding the Palisades Fire and Eaton Fire were announced early Friday morning as firefighters make their first substantial progress at containing the Palisades (8%) and Eaton (3%) fires.

Wind speeds across Southern California are expected to falter between Friday and Saturday morning before picking up again into next week. This video was broadcast on the NBC4 News at 6:30 a.m. on Jan. 10, 2025.

Only two wildfires in California history have caused more destruction than the Palisades Fire and Eaton Fire in LA County.

Although wildfires occur naturally, climate change amplifies their intensity and how quickly they can spread. Meteorologist Chase Cain explains two of the strongest links between climate change and the wildfire emergency in Southern California.

State authorities previously listed the Palisades as one of the five Southern California areas with the highest concentration of potential wildfire risks. The community also is among the areas most impacted by an unavailability of insurance coverage.

Investigators are considering an array of possible ignition sources for the huge fires that have killed at least 10 people and destroyed thousands of homes and businesses in the Los Angeles area.

A group of street vendors used the power of social media to raise money and buy necessities for those who were affected by the destructive Eaton Fire that burned through Altadena.

The LAFD downgraded an evacuation order in West Hills to a warning Thursday evening as crews continue to work on containing the blaze. Camilla Rambaldi reports for the NBC4 News at 6 p.m. on Jan. 9, 2025.

The curfew will take place from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. in Pacific Palisades and Altadena.

The ongoing wildfires have put the Los Angeles area under an air quality alert, with the National Weather Service advising SoCal residents to remain indoors with their windows closed and wear N-95 masks if they have to go outside.
