EXTREME HEAT

Scorching temperatures have returned to the Southland, but Los Angeles County health officials are warning residents and visitors to avoid cooling off at nine area beaches due to high bacteria levels.    

Prompted by an excessive heat warning, the city of Los Angeles will open and operate cooling centers through Wednesday evening, Mayor Karen Bass’ office announced.

Heat is the leading cause of climate-related deaths in the country, but knowing how deadly it is? That’s not as clear.
