Free Cooling Centers: Find One Near You

Libraries, senior centers, and activity centers offer heat wave refuge.

While particular themes may gain a spotlight during an unexpected and particularly robust heat wave -- the extreme temperatures, how long it will last, whether eggs can indeed by fried on sidewalks -- there's one truly pressing matter that takes precedence: Staying cool and well.

Southern California is now approaching three-digit territory for at least three or so days. This means that finding a cooling center nearby is of paramount importance.

Cooling centers, those free air-conditioned locations where spending a few hours at the height of the heat is paramount, are all listed on a City of Los Angeles Emergency Management Department pdf, along with opening hours and other details.

The Pasadena Senior Center, the Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center, the Rowland Heights Library, and the Bartlett Center in Torrance are all on the roster, with their cooling center hours. (And phone numbers, too.)

Numerous libraries, senior centers, and community centers around the region will be open, but if you have a question as to whether your neighborhood meet-up spot is serving as a center, be sure to call first.

Several other heat wave-weathering tips are listed on the sheet, including reducing physical activity and avoiding "hot, heavy meals."
